The move
One of our long-standing commercial customers is a retail business with its head office in Poole. A few times a year, we deliver shop and office fittings from their Poole headquarters to stores across the UK, and to Europe with trusted partner removal firms, either for new openings or refurbishments.
In January 2022 the job was to deliver the fittings for a new store opening in Leicester.
The challenge
A new store opening runs to a tight timetable. The shopfitting team was booked to start on a set morning, so the fittings needed to be on site, unloaded and out of the way early, or the whole fit-out would slip.
The load was a mix of retail and office items:
- Shelving and racking for the shop floor
- Desks, chairs and other furniture for the office areas
Leicester is a long drive from Poole, so an early start at the destination meant travelling the day before.
The fittings also had to arrive in perfect condition. Scratched shelving or damaged racking in a brand-new store is not something a retailer can simply live with on opening day.
What we did
Two experienced members of our crew, who had carried out this kind of delivery for the same customer many times, took on the job.
They arrived at the customer's Poole headquarters first thing in the morning and loaded the fittings, making sure the shelving, racking and furniture were wrapped and secured for the journey. Loading was planned so the items the shopfitters needed first would come off the lorry first. By lunchtime they were on the road to Leicester, where they stayed overnight.
At 8am the following morning they were on site at the new store, unloading and placing the fittings where the shopfitting team needed them.
The result
The delivery was complete by 10:30am. That gave the shopfitters most of the day to start fitting out the new premises, keeping the store opening on schedule. Nothing was damaged in transit, and the crew headed back to Dorset the same day.
