The move
A couple living in a ground-floor flat in Canford Cliffs asked us to help with their move a short distance along the coast to a second-floor flat in Branksome Chine.
They had spoken to several removal companies in the area before choosing us. They told us they were won over by how thoroughly the survey was carried out and by the level of protective equipment we planned to use.
The challenge
Moving between flats brings its own difficulties, even over a short distance:
- Stairs and a second floor. Everything had to be carried up to the new flat, rather than straight in from the lorry.
- Communal areas. Hallways, stairwells and entrances in both buildings are shared with neighbours, so they needed protecting as well as the flats themselves.
- Precious items. The couple had glass tables, special artwork and a grandfather clock, all of which needed extra care.
- Furniture to rebuild. A set of bunk beds had to be dismantled, moved and put back together.
What we did
The crew arrived at the Canford Cliffs flat at 8am. Before anything was moved, they laid heavy-duty sheeting and fitted padding to doors, frames and banisters, both inside the flat and in the communal areas.
The glass tables and artwork were individually wrapped and padded. The grandfather clock was prepared and wrapped so it could travel upright and safely. The bunk beds were taken apart, with fixings kept together so reassembly would be quick at the other end.
Thanks to the early start, the lorry was loaded by midday. At Branksome Chine the team protected the communal stairwell and the new flat in the same way, then carried everything up to the second floor, placing each item in the room the couple chose and rebuilding the bunk beds.
The result
Everything was unloaded and delivered by 4pm, with no damage to the belongings, the flats or the shared areas. The crew removed all the protection as they finished, leaving both buildings as they found them. The couple were delighted, and told the crew at the end of the day:
"Thank you very much; you've been brilliant. If we ever move again, we will definitely be using you."
