Customs for Poland after Brexit
Poland is in the EU, so since Brexit household goods from the UK need an export declaration and Polish customs clearance. If you are moving your main home, EU transfer of residence relief normally lets you bring your belongings in without duty or VAT.
You generally need to have lived outside the EU for at least 12 months and to have owned and used the goods for at least six months. They should not be sold or lent for 12 months after import.

Arriving in Poland
- Register your address: new residents register their address with the local office after moving in, so keep your tenancy or deeds to hand.
- Flats: many homes in Polish towns and cities are apartments. Tell us about lifts, stairs and parking at the survey.
- Paperwork in Polish: some offices may ask for documents in Polish, so ask early whether translations are needed.
- Currency: Poland uses the złoty, not the euro. Our partner Regency FX may be able to help; see currency exchange.
Packing, protection and insurance
Fragile items are properly wrapped, and we can build bespoke wooden crates for antiques and artwork. Pianos are handled through our specialist removals service.
Your move is fully insured for goods in transit. For shipping abroad, marine insurance must be arranged by you: 1st Choice does not provide it, so sort your cover before moving day.
If your new home is not ready, our storage in Dorset can hold your belongings short or long term.

What paperwork do I need to move my belongings to Poland?
You will usually need your passport, a detailed inventory of your household goods, proof of your new address in Poland such as a rental or purchase agreement, and evidence that you are leaving your UK home. Goods leaving the UK also need an export declaration. We help you prepare the paperwork, but check current Polish customs guidance too.
Do I pay duty or VAT on furniture moving to Poland?
Usually not, if you are moving your main home. EU transfer of residence relief generally covers belongings you have owned and used for at least six months, provided you have lived outside the EU for at least 12 months. New items and goods for resale may not qualify, so list them separately.
Is my move to Poland insured?
Your belongings are fully insured for goods in transit while we move them. For shipping abroad, marine insurance must be arranged by you, as 1st Choice Removals does not provide it. Arrange your cover before moving day and make sure the value reflects the full cost of replacing your belongings.
What should I not pack for a move to Poland?
Leave out flammable or hazardous items such as paint, gas bottles and aerosols. Food, plants, alcohol, tobacco and weapons are restricted by customs, so check before packing them. Keep passports, documents, medicines and valuables with you. We can advise on specific items when we survey your home.

Can you store my belongings before they go to Poland?
Yes. We have around 1,000 storage units across four local sites and use containerised storage for short or long periods. Your belongings stay in Dorset until you are ready for delivery to Poland. We do not offer storage outside the UK.
