Customs for the Netherlands after Brexit
Household goods leaving the UK for the Netherlands need an export declaration and Dutch customs clearance. If you are moving your main home, EU transfer of residence relief normally means no import duty or VAT on your belongings.
Conditions usually include living outside the EU for at least 12 months before the move and having owned and used the goods for at least six months. You should not sell or lend them for 12 months.

Dutch homes: stairs, hoists and parking
Many Dutch town houses and flats have very steep, narrow staircases. Large furniture is often lifted in through a window instead, using an external furniture lift or the hoist beam found on many older buildings.
- Tell us at your survey about stairs, windows, lifts and parking at the Dutch address.
- In cities, ask the municipality (gemeente) about parking arrangements for the lorry on moving day.
- After arrival you will need to register with your municipality.
Packing, protection and insurance
We wrap fragile items properly and can build bespoke wooden crates for antiques, artwork and other valuables. Pianos are handled through our specialist removals service.
Your move is fully insured for goods in transit. For shipping abroad, marine insurance must be arranged by you: 1st Choice does not provide it, so sort your cover before moving day.

What paperwork do I need to move to the Netherlands from the UK?
You will normally need your passport, a detailed inventory of your household goods, proof of your new Dutch address such as a tenancy or purchase contract, and proof that you are leaving your UK home. An export declaration is also made when goods leave the UK. We help you prepare the paperwork, but check the latest Dutch customs guidance too.
Do I pay import tax on my belongings moving to the Netherlands?
Usually not, when you are moving your main home. EU transfer of residence relief generally covers belongings you have owned and used for at least six months, provided you have lived outside the EU for at least 12 months. New items and goods for resale may not qualify, so list them separately.
How do you get furniture into a Dutch flat with steep stairs?
Many Dutch homes have narrow, steep staircases, so large items often go in through a window using an external furniture lift or a building's hoist beam. Tell us about the property at your survey, ideally with photos of the stairs and windows, so we can plan the delivery before moving day.
Is my move to the Netherlands insured?
Your belongings are fully insured for goods in transit while we move them. For shipping abroad, marine insurance must be arranged by you, as 1st Choice Removals does not provide it. Arrange cover before moving day and make sure the value reflects the full cost of replacing your belongings.

Can you store my belongings before they go to the Netherlands?
Yes. We have around 1,000 storage units across four local sites and use containerised storage, short or long term. It suits people whose Dutch home is not ready or who are renting first. Your belongings stay in Dorset until you book delivery. We do not offer storage outside the UK.
